Cortisol, Shift Work, and Ashwagandha: What 48-Hour Shifts Do to Your Stress Hormones
For years, I thought being "wired all the time" was just part of the job. This rhythm is called the cortisol awakening response, and it's one of the most consistent findings in circadian biology.
Rotating shifts break that shape. Research on night and rotating shift workers shows a blunted morning cortisol peak and elevated evening cortisol — nearly the inverse of the healthy pattern. Your body doesn't get the clean "go" signal in the morning, and doesn't get the "stand down" signal at night. Over months and years, that's not a minor rhythm shift. It's a system stuck partway between alert and exhausted, most of the time.
Acute stress compounds on top of this. A high-acuity call adds a real cortisol spike — that's appropriate and necessary in the moment. The problem is that spike is landing on a baseline that's already dysregulated from the schedule itself, rather than a baseline that resets cleanly between events the way it would for someone with a stable circadian rhythm.
The downstream effects are broad. Why "Just Manage Your Stress" Isn't Real Advice Here
Almost every piece of general stress content assumes you can reduce the stressor: fewer meetings, better boundaries, a vacation. That's not available to someone on a rotating 24 or 48-hour schedule. The shift is the stressor, and it isn't going anywhere.
That reframes the goal. It's not about eliminating the stress response — it's about supporting the body's ability to regulate that response so it doesn't stay switched on between calls, between shifts, and into the sleep window you actually have.

Timing matters less than consistency. Unlike a stimulant, ashwagandha's effect builds over weeks of daily use as it works on the underlying HPA axis regulation, not through an acute dose-response. This is a background-support supplement, not a pre-shift one.
